Tapalpa once again, the beautiful little town in the mountains of Jalisco México, is such a photogenic place. In this case i just shot a regular common street, i mean most of the streets in Tapalpa looks just like this one and because it all looks similar i always waste time thinking on the best spot for a shot and never actually getting it. So this time i just went for the first street with not many cars, with that goal in mind i took this shot.

Las Piedrotas HDR

On new years i visited Tapalpa and decided to do some experiments with HDR’s and still photographs videos. Sometimes is hard not to go overboard with the HDR capabilities, in this case, even if the photo looks over saturated with details i kind of like it. How about you guys? how much is too much?

I also carry on experimenting with still photographs putting together a video, Im intending to do something bigger louder and shinier hopefully soon. Leave your comments.

Rounded Mirrors

We’re getting closer to the driest season of the year and yet we had some rainy days last week, after the rain the colours and light were very soft so it was the time to get out and take some photographs, i didn’t have to go very far, i took this picture literally outside of my office window i reckon i could have taken it from my chair. Is an HDR and i was a bit surprised by the result, hope you like it!

My garden

I found the bulbs of a wild orchid laying on the ground in the forest of Tapalpa Mexico, last summer, it wasn’t going to survive so i decided to bring it home and take care of it, surprisingly even with this very cold winter it bloomed, 2 months after i placed it on the trunk of one of the trees at my garden, I though it deserved an HDR. Did i mention i love Orchids?

Monterrey Beach

Last November I had the chance to visit this amazing private beach in the coast of Nayarit Mexico called Punta Monterrey. Is amazing to think that this hidden gem is so close to a major tourism hot spot like Puerto Vallarta and yet not many people knows that even exist. This is an HDR of the northern part of the beach. I did an HDR tutorial before with a photo taken at that same place, check it here.

I’ve been thinking for a while now about making a short film all made out of still photographs, i did my first test there, check it out:

White Dreams (HDR)

This is a particularly tricky shot, this white flower is surrounded by more white flowers and is getting direct natural light, the sensors of my camera were going crazy. This was the perfect situation for an HDR. It was quite windy which makes bracketing pretty difficult if i were going to try the usual multi-exposure HDR. I decided to use RAW, back to my Mac I processed the photograph to get 3 files with 3 different exposures in order to extract a bit of detail from the main subject. It takes a little longer than the Bracketing method but the results can be as good. I have written a tutorial on this blog about HDRs where i explain how to create them using bracketing. I also tried to avoid the excessive “HDR ish” look and have a more natural result.

Monterrey Beach HDR Tutorial

I was taking photographs for a client’s website, this business is a Hotel in a private beach on the coast of Nayarit México (www.monterreybeach.com) and it was the perfect situation to try to take an HDR for the first time, here’s how i made it.

Set your camera to take RAW format pictures. RAW is very handy for this specific porpoise, when processing the photos you can make the most of each one.

Set the bracketing of your camera to take the right exposures for your subject, the point is to get as much details as possible using different expositions from the same subject.

You will need to need to take at least 2 photos with different exposures, in this case I took three. The pics need to be exactly the same in terms of composition, and for this you’d need a tripod. Some software can help you adjust little details and differences between the photos but I believe the best way is to use a steady tripod.

Take your pictures until you are happy with the details of your subject using different expositions.

Turn your Mac on

Process your RAW files and export them in 32 bits TIFs. The files might result quite big, but is always better to work with rich info files of 32 bits.

Open your HDR software, for this picture I used Photomatix Pro. Play with different settings until you’re satisfied with the results, then proceed to tonemap your hdr.

By now you’re probably very excited with the resulting image, take your photograph into photoshop for the last details and enjoy.

For this shot I took something like 10 sets of pictures until i was happy with the shots but then it took me a whole morning to get a decent result, the secret for HDR’s is definitely practice and patience.
